Pivotal Game 5 Goes to
Host Wolverines, 3-2 |
The Detroit
Wolverines moved to within one game of the
Round 2 today, downing the New
York Knickerbockers 3-2 in a low-scoring,
extra-inning affair at State Fair Grounds. Leading
the way for the Wolverines was right-hander Alvin
Liles, who was named player of the game after
he threw 8 innings allowing 2 runs. The win gives
the Wolverines a 3-2 advantage in the best-of-7
World's Series.
Late in the game, left fielder Louis
Gilmore had a big at-bat for Detroit. In the
bottom of the tenth, he hit a run-scoring single off
Cookie Whaley.
The play gave the Wolverines a 3-2 lead.
Gilmore attributed the win to "energy and focus on
the part of everyone."
Game 6 is scheduled for Wednesday in New York. The
scheduled starters for the game are Carl
Dye for the Detroit Wolverines and Phineas
Flint for the the New York Knickerbockers.
