Bath Handcuffs Quakers,
Explorers Seize 1-0 Advantage in World Series
|
The St.
Louis Explorers started the World Series in
dramatic fashion today, stealing Game 1 from the Philadelphia
Quakers in a walk-off in the 10th inning. St.
Louis took the 2-1 win thanks in large part to a
good day from starter Edgar
Bath. The right-hander threw 10 innings of
8-hit ball in the win, which gave the Explorers a
1-0 lead to start the best-of-7 series.
The game was at a stalemate until shortstop Ross
Engler came to bat in the bottom of the tenth.
Facing Philadelphia pitcher Clay
Easton, he hit a 2-1 sinker for a run-scoring
single. It was a game-changer, putting St. Louis on
top, 2-1.
"I tried to mix it up, keep them off balance," said
Bath.
The next game is scheduled for tomorrow in St.
Louis. Slated to start are Soloman
Carlson for the Philadelphia Quakers and Warley
Krueger for the the St. Louis Explorers.
