Pivotal Game 5 Goes to
Host Wolverines, 2-1 |
The Detroit
Wolverines moved to within one game of the
Round 2 today, downing the Brooklyn
Bluebirds 2-1 in a low-scoring, extra-inning
affair at Wolverine Field. Leading the way for the
Wolverines was right-hander Jerome
Wheelock, who was named player of the game
after he threw 10 innings of shutout ball. The win
gives the Wolverines a 3-2 advantage in the
best-of-7 World Series.
The Wolverines beat the Bluebirds in part due to
timely hitting. Case in point: the two-out single Eugene
Ayres produced in the bottom of the 14th.
Batting against Brooklyn pitcher Tony
Westbrook, Ayres gave his team a 2-1 lead when
he hit a walk-off run-scoring single.
"This place was rockin'," said Ayres.
Game 6 is scheduled for Tuesday, October 12th, 1920
in Brooklyn. Slated to start are Hector
Healey for the Detroit Wolverines and Clay
Baldwin for the the Brooklyn Bluebirds.
