Rutherford Handcuffs
Knickerbockers, Explorers Seize 1-0 Advantage in
World Series |
The stakes were high. Brock
Rutherford was ready.
The right-hander turned in a performance for the
ages at Knickerbocker Stadium today, pitching a
9-inning, complete-game shutout to lead the St.
Louis Explorers to victory in Game 1 of the
World Series. Rutherford held the New
York Knickerbockers to 6 hits and no walks,
while striking out 6. The win got the best-of-7
series off to a good start for St. Louis, which now
leads 1-0.
Rutherford, the St. Louis right-hander, went 9
innings, allowing no earned runs on 6 hits. He
collected 6 strikeouts.
"You work hard, day in and day out, hoping to give
the fans something to cheer about. Today was a good
day," Rutherford told the St. Louis Gazette.
Game 2 is scheduled for tomorrow at Knickerbocker
Stadium. The scheduled starters for the game are Harry
McLoughlin for St. Louis and Naman
Futch for New York.
