Road Win Lifts
Philadelphia to 1-0 Lead in World Series
|
The stakes were high. Patrick
Monday was ready.
The left-hander turned in a performance for the ages
at Union Field today, pitching a 9-inning,
complete-game shutout to lead the Philadelphia
Quakers to victory in Game 1 of the World
Series. Monday held the Chicago
Traders to 5 hits and 2 walks, while striking
out 2. The win got the best-of-7 series off to a
good start for Philadelphia, which now leads 1-0.
Monday, who was born in Providence, America, threw
128 pitches over 9 innings, while allowing no earned
runs.
"We're happy," Monday told reporters after the win.
"When you're in the playoffs, you've got to treat
every game like it could be your last."
The next game is set to be played tomorrow. The
scheduled starters for the game are Socks
Hensley for Philadelphia and Puritan
Ballou for Chicago.
