Quakers, Traders Play 14 to Settle Game 1, Philadelphia Now Leads Series 1-0
As the Philadelphia Quakers and Chicago Traders battled through extra innings, it was a rookie who made the difference.

Young Philadelphia pinch hitter Jim Barber, 22, took player of the game honors at Union Field today with a strong hitting performance in the 14-inning marathon. Barber went 1 for 1 with a home run. He drove in 3 runs and scored once during the 10-7 Philadelphia win over the Traders. The win gives the Quakers a 1-0 lead in the best-of-7 World Series.

The most crucial at-bat for Philadelphia came in the top of the 14th inning. That's when Barber stroked a full count cutter to left for a 3-run home run, putting Philadelphia up, 10-7.

"I just try to see the ball and put a good swing on it," said Barber.

Game 2 is scheduled for tomorrow. The scheduled starters for the game are Hank Hurst for the Philadelphia Quakers and Jack Jenkins for the the Chicago Traders.
