Rutherford Handcuffs
Knickerbockers, Explorers Seize 1-0 Advantage in
World Series |
At 39, Brock
Rutherford knows he may not have many playoff
appearances left, so he was determined to make it
memorable. Mission accomplished.
The St. Louis
Explorers starting pitcher threw 12 innings of
shutout ball to help his club get past the New
York Knickerbockers, 1-0, in Game 1 of the
World Series at Castle Point Field today. Rutherford
took player of the game honors for his performance.
With the win, St. Louis takes a 1-0 lead in the
best-of-7 series.
Late in the game, shortstop Ben
Thoreson had a big at-bat for St. Louis. In
the bottom of the 15th, he hit a run-scoring double
off Jim
Gregory. The play gave the Explorers a 1-0
lead.
Rutherford said afterward that he was "glad the fans
were treated to a good ballgame."
The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Castle
Point Field. The scheduled starters for the game are
Frederic Isaac
for New York and George
Culver for St. Louis.
