Road Win Lifts St. Louis
to 1-0 Lead in World Series
|
The stakes were high. Brock
Rutherford was ready.
The right-hander turned in a performance for the
ages at Knickerbocker Stadium today, pitching a
9-inning, complete-game shutout to lead the St.
Louis Explorers to victory in Game 1 of the
World Series. Rutherford held the New
York Knickerbockers to 5 hits and 1 walk,
while striking out 4. The win got the best-of-7
series off to a good start for St. Louis, which now
leads 1-0.
Rutherford, who was born in Columbus, Ohio, threw
131 pitches over 9 innings, while allowing no earned
runs.
"We're one game closer to our goal," St. Louis
manager said later. "It isn't any more complicated
than that."
Game 2 is scheduled for tomorrow at Knickerbocker
Stadium in New York. The scheduled starters for the
game are Jim
O'Leary for St. Louis and Lowry
Hopkins for New York.
