The League Championship Series got off to a quiet start today, with the traveling New York Empires taking a low-scoring 2-1 win over the host San Francisco Seagulls. New York left-hander Tom Green was marvelous at Mission Field and was named player of the game. The Empires now hold a 1-0 lead in the best-of-7 series.

Green, who was born in Girard, Louisiana, threw 107 pitches over 9 innings, while allowing 1 earned run.

"We had a good game plan," Green said, "and we were able to execute it."

The next game is scheduled for tomorrow at Mission Field in San Francisco. Slated to start are Mike Higgins for the New York Empires and Mike Booth for the the San Francisco Seagulls.
