Home Loss Shrinks Empires' Series Lead to 2-1
The San Francisco Seagulls have closed some of the gap between themselves and the series-leading New York Empires, winning 9-4 at Queens Field today. Seagulls first baseman Jim Payne was named player of the game after he went 4-5 with 4 singles and a walk, while scoring 2 runs. The win cuts the deficit facing the Seagulls to 2-1 in the best-of-7 League Championship Series.

Ray Jones's at-bat in the top of the eighth inning was a big one for San Francisco. Coming to bat with one out, the bases loaded and San Francisco leading 5-4, the second baseman reached on an error by the center fielder, driving in 2 runs.

"It's nice to come out on top today," said Payne.

Game 4 is set to be played tomorrow at Queens Field. The scheduled starters for the game are Paul Burke for the San Francisco Seagulls and Tom Green for the the New York Empires.
