Beam Handcuffs Seagulls,
Quakers Seize 2-1 Advantage in WS
|
When the stakes were high, Paul
Beam raised his game to match.
The left-handed Beam turned in a stellar performance
in Game 3 of the World Series today, pitching a
9-inning, complete-game shutout to lead the Philadelphia
Quakers to victory. He allowed 8 hits and
struck out 7. The win gave Philadelphia a 2-1 lead
over the San
Francisco Seagulls in the best-of-7 series.
Chick Smith
aided the Philadelphia cause with a run-scoring
sacrifice fly in the bottom of the fifth. For the
game, the right fielder drove in one run.
San Francisco
manager Al Borie said he was "mildly disappointed"
with the loss. "We had our opportunities, but we
didn't take advantage of them," he said.
Game 4 is scheduled for tomorrow at Penn's Landing
Park. The scheduled starters for the game are Don
Kircher for San Francisco and Alex
Geary for Philadelphia.
