Empires Rally Past Hawks
to Claim 2-0 Series Lead |
A big day at the plate from
left fielder Jim
Griffin was not enough to keep the New
York Empires from extending their lead in the
League Championship Series. The Empires topped
Griffin and the Chicago
Hawks 4-3 at Queens Field today in Game 2, and
now hold a 2-0 edge in the best-of-7 series. Griffin
was 3 for 4 with a home run and 2 singles. He drove
in 3 runs and scored once in the loss.
Paul Rind
was the walk-off hero for New York. With the game
tied in the bottom of the ninth inning, the Empires
center fielder hit a dramatic run-scoring single to
send the teams home.
"The competition leap this year was tough to adjust
to and I feel like there has been another jump in
the playoffs," said Rind, a rookie this season.
"You're only playing the best now and everyone has
time to rest and prepare for you."
The next game is scheduled for Friday, October 8th,
1954 at Hyde Park Stadium. Slated to start are Gary
Clarke for the New York Empires and Kurt
Schott for the the Chicago Hawks.
