Knickerbockers Hammered by Cooper, Drop Game 4 to Empires
On the verge of being swept and facing a red-hot New York Knickerbockers team, the New York Empires had a tough assignment. Zip Cooper delivered.

The Empires left fielder was unstoppable for the visitors, as he went 3 for 4 with a home run and a double. He scored 2 runs and drove in 2 in guiding his club to its first victory of the series, 6-5. Cooper, 28, earned accolades for his efforts. The win means New York now trails 3-1 in the best-of-7 series.

Virgil Donovan dealt the Knickerbockers a blow in the bottom of the fifth. Batting with the bases loaded and New York leading 2-1, Donovan, the 3rd overall pick in the 1949 draft, hit a 3-1 cutter for a bases-clearing double.

"I like our moxie," said Empires manager Philipe Yazzie.

Game 5 is scheduled for tomorrow in New York. Slated to start are John Ambrose for New York and Lew Johnson for New York.
