When the stakes were high, Bruce Elsner raised his game to match.

The right-handed Elsner turned in a stellar performance in Game 2 of the League Championship Series today, pitching a 9-inning, complete-game shutout to lead the Chicago Hawks to victory. He allowed 3 hits and struck out 5. The win gave Chicago a 2-0 lead over the Toronto Hurons in the best-of-7 series.

Elsner was effective against the Hurons, seldom allowing a hard-hit ball. The right-hander limited Toronto to just 1 run on 3 hits over 9 innings.

"I'll be honest," said Elsner. "I was running on fumes at the end."

Game 3 is scheduled for Friday at Dominion Field in Toronto.
