The Houston Drillers started the League Championship Series in style, winning on the road against the Detroit Wolverines at Wolverine Field by a score of 4-2 to take an early 1-0 lead in the best-of-7 series. Drillers catcher Charlie Fee excelled. He belted 2 home runs.

Mark Sisson, who finished 3rd in the ABL in home runs with 35 in 1971, helped out the Houston cause in the top of the fifth inning with a run-scoring single. For the game, the center fielder went 1 for 5.

In postgame remarks, Fee hailed his team's "mettle."
