Clutch Hitting Delivers Win for Seagulls
The San Francisco Seagulls withstood a fine game by Houston first baseman Mike Wells at Sam Houston Field, to upend the Drillers, 11-4. Wells was 2-3 with a home run and a walk. He scored 2 times and drove in 2. San Francisco reliever Dave Maughan picked up the win to move to 1-0. Dick Witt suffered the loss. San Francisco sits at 5-1.

The game was at a stalemate until third baseman Scott Wagner came to bat in the top of the ninth. Facing Houston pitcher Dick Witt, he hit a full count fastball for a 2-run single. It was a game-changer, putting San Francisco on top, 6-4.

"Their at-bats were really impressive against us," said losing manager Nate Nilsson.
