Wright Slugs Knickerbockers to 7-5 Win
|
The New York Knickerbockers beat the Cleveland Bobcats, 7-5, at Knickerbocker Stadium. Steve Wright, in particular, was impressive. He was 3 for 5 with 2 home runs and a double, while scoring 3 runs and driving in 3. Bruce Elsner earned the win after being summoned from the bullpen. The right-hander allowed no runs on 1 hit in 1.2 innings. He upped his record to 4-0. Ollie Hundley nailed down his 16th save.
Had Diego Mateo not delivered a key base hit in the bottom of the seventh, the outcome might have been different. Instead, with two down and runners on 2nd and 3rd, Mateo hit a run-scoring single. That made the score 6-5, in favor of the Knickerbockers.
"We just try to have good at-bats, whether we're winning, losing, or tied," said Mateo.
The win puts New York at 38-36 this season.
