Hawks Stumble, Lose to Empires
|
The New York Empires beat the Chicago Hawks, 10-2, at Hyde Park Stadium. Eddie Ellison, who is a seven-time All-Star, starred for New York. He was 2 for 3 with a double and 2 walks. He drove in 2 runs and scored once. Andy Humphrey was the winner. Over 7 innings, he yielded 2 runs on 8 hits, with 3 walks and 2 strikeouts. With the win, New York upped its record to 43-31.
The game turned with one out in the top of the fourth. That's when Ellison hit a 2-run double off Bill Hill. It propelled the Empires into the lead, 3-1.
"You can't sugarcoat this one," said Chicago manager Mike Flaherty. "They smoked us."
