Chicago Scrapes Out 12-8 Win
The Chicago Hawks overcame a pretty good performance by Los Angeles left fielder Paul McCarthy, beating the Pobladores, 12-8, at Hyde Park Stadium. McCarthy went 3-5 with a home run and a double. He scored 2 runs and drove in 3. Steve Papa notched the win in relief. The right-hander allowed 1 run on 2 hits in 2 innings. His record now sits at 6-6. Chicago now sits at 27-49, while Los Angeles falls to 27-45.

The game was at a stalemate until center fielder Paul Backer came to bat in the bottom of the eighth. Facing Los Angeles pitcher Danny Sanchez, he hit a 2-2 fastball for a run-scoring single. It was a game-changer, putting Chicago on top, 9-8.

"I give credit to my teammates for this win. We got it done," Backer told the Chicago News.
