Generals Tagged with 4-1 Loss
|
The New York Empires rode a solid performance from 22-year-old starting pitcher Larry Stanford to a win, beating the Atlanta Generals, 4-1, at Queens Field. New York is in 5th place in the American Baseball League Eastern Division with a record of 36-38.
Earl Petersen had a big 2-run home run for the Empires in the bottom of the sixth inning. With New York leading 2-0 and a runner on 1st, he sized up a changeup from Paul Wiley, who finished 4th in the NBL in innings pitched with 285.2 in 1961, and punished it. The result was his 5th home run of the season, which put the Empires on top, 4-0.
New York manager John Harris praised his team's "energy."
