The New York Empires beat the Detroit Wolverines, 5-3, at Wolverine Field. Eddie Ellison, in particular, was impressive. He went 2-4 with 2 home runs. The winner was New York reliever Jack Pratt, now 2-1. The loser was Elmer Bernstein. Earning the save was Jack Neenan. He's now cashed in 14 of 19 save opportunities.

The game was at a stalemate until right fielder Paul Brower came to bat in the top of the ninth. Facing Detroit pitcher Elmer Bernstein, he hit a 1-1 cutter for a 2-run single. It was a game-changer, putting New York on top, 5-3.

New York manager Dan Whiting called it "a darn good win."

The win gives New York a season record of 45-34.
