St. Louis picked up a win at Corps of Discovery Stadium, bumping off the San Diego Captains, 9-4. Pitcher Bob Trout was a major reason the Explorers emerged victorious. At 38-41, the Explorers claim 5th place in the National Baseball League Western Division.

Ken Osterhage had a big 2-run double for the Explorers in the bottom of the second inning. With St. Louis leading 2-0 and the bases loaded, he got a sinker from Ray Heath, who finished 2nd in the NBL in innings pitched with 264.0 in 1971, and swatted a double to right-center. It was his 15th double of the season, and more importantly, it put the Explorers ahead, 4-0.

"Another day, another win. On to the next one," Osterhage told the St. Louis Today.
