John Fredrick of the Detroit Wolverines was on top of his game.

The 29-year-old tantalized the Baltimore Lords with crisp curves and changeups, mixed in with just enough fastballs to keep the batters honest, shutting them out, 7-0.

"He had the changeup working," Baltimore manager Steve Read said in postgame comments. "You knew it was coming and you still grounded out -- and then he threw it even slower."

The Detroit hurler had 3 strikeouts, gave up 6 walks and surrendered 5 hits in his complete-game effort.

Fredrick told reporters after the game that "keeping the ball down is the key to being successful in this league."

"If you don't do that, they'll make you pay," he said.

This season, Fredrick has fashioned a 8-5 mark and 3.66 ERA in 123 innings. Opposing clubs are batting .253 against him and he has logged 70 strikeouts.
