Knickerbockers Sneak By Quakers, 2-1
|
Quakers Stadium hosted an old-fashioned pitchers' duel.
Sid Shafer, who is tied for 8th in the NBL in quality starts with 12, was terrific for the New York Knickerbockers in his team's 2-1 triumph over the Philadelphia Quakers. His performance earned Shafer rave reviews. Earning the save was Ollie Hundley. He's now cashed in 17 of 19 save opportunities.
Francisco Chavez, who finished 3rd in the NBL in home runs with 29 in 1969, helped out the New York cause in the top of the eighth inning with a run-scoring double. For the game, the first baseman went 1-4 with a double.
"We squandered some opportunities," said Philadelphia manager Jeff Green.
With the victory, the Knickerbockers upped their record to 42-39.
