Jim Bryant, who won the Rookie of the Year Award in 1966, had a strong outing for the Detroit Wolverines against the Houston Drillers at Sam Houston Field. The right-hander was a big part of his team's 5-3 win. Bryant, the winner, moves to 7-9. He threw 7 innings of 3-hit ball, while fanning 4 and giving up 2 walks. The first-place Wolverines now have a record of 42-38.

Detroit took a 5-0 lead on Bob Gilley's 13th double of the season. The bases-clearing double, which Gilley hit in the top of the eighth, left Houston pitcher Tom McAteer visibly frustrated.

"I'm just trying to make sure I'm focused for each and every pitch," said Bryant.
