Captains Take Tight Tangle
San Diego third baseman Darrell Conley played a vital role in his team's 5-4 conquest of Milwaukee. He went 4-4 with 4 singles for San Diego. The win went to Howard McDonnell in relief, making him now 1-1. Bernie Kirk took the loss for Milwaukee. Brian Meade earned the save, his 11th in 12 tries.

Had Jose Torres not delivered a key base hit in the bottom of the eighth, the outcome might have been different. Instead, with two down and runners on 2nd and 3rd, Torres hit a 2-run single. That made the score 5-4, in favor of the Captains.

"Say want you want about this team, they play nine innings hard," said San Diego manager Joe Mack.

By defeating Milwaukee, the 4th-place Captains improved to 45-42.
