On Road, Atlanta Drops Montreal, 9-8
|
Montreal catcher Marvin Walker was sensational. He was 3 for 5 with a home run and 2 singles. He scored 2 times and drove in 3. But it wasn't enough to rally his team to a win. Atlanta beat the Habitants, 9-8. Ron Cwiklinski, who was drafted in the 2nd round of the 1967 draft, was the winner. He's now 3-7. The loser was Bob Schar. Renie White recorded the save for Atlanta, his 10th of the season.
The Habitants had been locked in a 3-3 tie with the Generals going into the top of the fifth inning. That changed quickly when the 25-year old left fielder Ed Mika came to the plate. Mika hit a 2-run double on a 2-1 curveball from Montreal hurler Bob Schar. It was Mika's 10th double of the year.
"It was a nice win for our side today," said Generals manager Philipe Yazzie. "Not perfect, but we'll take it."
Atlanta, at 42-45, holds down 4th place in the American Baseball League Eastern Division.
