Explorers Score Late to Nip Dairymen, 4-3
|
The St. Louis Explorers picked up a win at Corps of Discovery Stadium, taking down the Milwaukee Dairymen, 4-3. Starting pitcher Bob Trout was a big reason why. Trout yielded 3 runs over 8 innings to notch the win. He scattered 4 hits, walked 5, and struck out 6. His record improves to 9-2. Bernie Tate earned the save, his 13th, for the Explorers.
Had Tommy Pickett not delivered a key base hit in the bottom of the eighth, the outcome might have been different. Instead, with two down and runners on 1st and 2nd, Pickett hit a run-scoring single. That made the score 4-3, in favor of the Explorers.
St. Louis manager Ray Fleetwood praised his team's "businesslike approach."
The win lifted the St. Louis record to 45-43.
