Smilanich Tosses 3-0 Shutout Against San Francisco
|
The San Francisco Seagulls manager was philosophical in the clubhouse following a shutout loss to the Chicago Hawks. The Seagulls were overpowered by Chicago starter Doug Smilanich, who hurled his club to victory, 3-0.
"It was just one of those games -- shake it off and do better next time," Al Borie said.
Over 9 innings, Smilanich blanked San Francisco on 6 hits with 3 walks and 6 strikeouts.
"I kept them off balance. I could tell a lot of them were late on fastballs because they were fouling them off. Once you see that, it sets them up for other pitches," Smilanich said.
"I set them up, where if they chased one breaking ball, they were going to chase another one."
In 18 starts this season, Smilanich has rung up a 4-8 record and a 6.48 ERA.
