Knickerbockers Stay Hot, Beat Bluebirds, 4-1
|
Starting pitcher Vern Gould was a major factor in the 4-1 New York Knickerbockers triumph over the Brooklyn Bluebirds. Wayne Houston nailed down his 2nd save. The Bluebirds drop to 4-5 and continue their inconsistent start to the 1977 season.
Steve Wells had a big 2-run double for the Knickerbockers in the bottom of the fifth inning. With New York leading 2-1 and runners on 2nd and 3rd, he got a cutter from Dave Gaultney, who was drafted in the 2nd round of the 1969 draft, and swatted a double to right. It was his 2nd double of the season, and more importantly, it put the Knickerbockers ahead, 4-1.
"We'll keep playing hard and let the chips fall where they may," said New York manager Sean Kelly.
