The 1974 season did not get off to quite the start the New York Empires had hoped, with an opening day loss to the Baltimore Lords at Queens Field. The final score was 4-1. Starting Pitcher Larry Diego was the top performer for Baltimore. Denny Boyd picked up his 1st save of the season.

Mike Sheffield had a direct impact on the outcome. Sheffield contributed a 2-run single in the top of the first inning to put Baltimore up, 2-0.
