Knickerbockers Stumble, Lose to Burros
|
The Denver Burros topped the New York Knickerbockers, 9-4, at Knickerbocker Stadium. Denver first baseman John Crabtree was a spark plug for the offense. He went 3 for 5 with a home run and a triple, while scoring 2 times and driving in 3. Denver improves to 61-37 with the win. They lead their division by 5½ games.
Dick Hoffmeier had a big 2-run double for the Burros in the top of the first inning. With Denver leading 3-0 and the bases loaded, he got a sinker from 28-year old right-handed pitcher Danny Abril and swatted a double to right-center. It was his 5th double of the season, and more importantly, it put the Burros ahead, 5-0.
"We take it day by day here," said Hoffmeier, "and today was a good one for us."
