Downbound Empires Lose 9th Straight
Queens Field was the site of a tense game between the New York Empires and Detroit Wolverines.

Detroit Wolverines pitcher Larry Black was in fine form, leading his team past the New York Empires, 3-1. John Bailey earned the save, his 9th.

Jim Caldwell came through with a big-time hit for Detroit. The pinch hitter smacked a 2-run home run in the top of the eighth inning to give his team the lead, 3-1. It was his only hit, but it was clutch.

"Whenever we hold the other team to one run," said Wolverines manager Alex Wobbema, "I like our chances."

The losing skid has reached 9 games for New York.
