Knickerbockers Top Bluebirds in Extras, 6-5
|
The New York Knickerbockers weathered a fine game by Brooklyn first baseman Mike Bennett to upend the Bluebirds, 6-5, at Knickerbocker Stadium. Bennett was 3 for 5 with a home run and 2 singles, while adding 3 RBI and scoring once. Bruce Owen picked up the win in relief, improving his record to 5-1. Bob Hill, who finished 5th in the NBL in saves with 19 in 1971, was tagged with the loss. The Knickerbockers move to 62-46 with the win, while the Bluebirds drop to 55-53.
The decisive blow was delivered by Dave DeHaan in the bottom of the tenth when he hit a run-scoring double off fan favorite Bob Hill to win the game for New York. The home crowd went nuts.
"It's great when the crowd is energized," DeHaan said.
