Atlanta beat Boston on the strength of starting pitcher Ron Cwiklinski's fine effort. The right-hander led his team to a win, 2-1. The winning pitcher was Cwiklinski, now 5-9. He tossed 7 innings of 3-hit ball, while walking 3 and fanning 8. The defeat makes Boston 50-57.

Roberto Palacios, who finished 4th in the ABL in wins above replacement with 8.1 in 1971, had a direct impact on the outcome. Palacios contributed a run-scoring ground out in the top of the sixth inning to put Atlanta up, 2-1.

"Wins don't come easy," Palacios told the Atlanta Bulletin. "They don't just hand them out like lollipops."
