New York beat Montreal on the strength of starting pitcher Jon Pierce's fine effort. The left-hander led his team to a win, 5-2. Tom Duncan locked down his 14th save. The 4th-place Empires lifted their record to 53-55.

Who knows how it might've ended, had it not been for Al Castro? The New York right fielder had a 2-run single in the top of the fifth inning to put the Empires on top, 5-1. For the game, Castro had 1 double and 1 single in 4 at-bats.

"It doesn't matter if you're 10 games over .500 or 10 games under, it feels good to win," Castro told the New York Chronicle.
