Empires Rebuff Generals, 3-1
|
New York and Atlanta played a hard-fought contest.
The New York Empires topped the Atlanta Generals, 3-1, with left fielder Paul Brower playing a big role. Brower was 2 for 4 with a home run and a double for the Empires in the win. The winner in relief was Dave Kretz. He is now 1-1. The right-hander allowed 1 run on 6 hits in 4 innings. Jack Pratt converted his 17th save in 23 tries.
Javier Abarca, the 15th overall pick in the 1969 draft, had a direct impact on the outcome. Abarca contributed a solo home run in the top of the second inning to put New York up, 2-0.
In postgame remarks, Abarca hailed his team's "single-minded focus."
New York is third in the American Baseball League Eastern Division with a record of 64-58.
