Martinez, Explorers Ring Up 9-4 Win
Getting a good performance from third baseman Fernando Martinez, the St. Louis Explorers defeated the Chicago Traders, 9-4. Martinez went 3-5 with a home run and a double. He scored 2 times and drove in 5 for the Explorers. Jim Thurlow picked up the win, improving his season record to 2-2. He struck out 3 in 9 innings. By defeating Chicago, the 6th-place Explorers improved to 53-70.

With St. Louis trailing 4-3 in the top of the fourth, Martinez hit a changeup from Jack Storey for a grand slam home run. It was his 10th home run of the season and put the Explorers ahead, 7-4.

"I'm just trying to make good contact," said Martinez, "one at-bat at a time."
