Empires Score Late to Nip Drillers, 2-1
|
Jon Pierce, who is tied for 7th in the ABL with a 6.5 K/9 rate, was in top form in a tight contest between New York and Houston. The Empires left-hander helped his team beat the Drillers, 2-1. Reliever Tom Duncan picked up the win. His record improves to 8-8. Bill Switzer, who is tied for 5th in the ABL in saves with 15, took the loss. With the win, the Empires have a record of 60-65.
The decisive blow was delivered by Al Castro in the bottom of the ninth when he hit a solo home run off 25-year old left-handed pitcher Bill Switzer to win the game for New York. The home crowd went nuts.
"It was bedlam at the end," Castro said.
