Captains Need Extra Frames to Get Past Traders
San Diego pitcher Dave Fields did his part in helping his team beat the Chicago Traders, 5-2. The left-hander kept opposing batters from doing too much damage. Darryl Armstrong picked up the win in relief, improving his record to 7-10. Jack Storey, the 16th overall pick in the 1963 draft, was tagged with the loss. The win elevated the Captains to 70-61.

San Diego needed the clutch hitting of Dick Howard to seal the deal. The second baseman swatted a solo home run in the top of the tenth inning to put the Captains on top, 3-2. For the game, Howard had 1 home run and 1 single in 5 at-bats.

"We didn't go down without a fight," said Chicago manager Larry Link.
