Ed Payne, who is tied for 6th in the NBL with a 2.86 ERA, imposed his will on the Bulls from the get-go. Relying mainly on his sinker, the left-hander spearheaded the 2-1 San Diego triumph. The win puts San Diego at 70-61 this season.

The Captains got a big at-bat from third baseman Reid Rodgers. For the game, Rodgers went 1-3 with a home run. He drove in 2 runs and scored once. In the top of the fourth, with a runner on 1st, he stroked a 2-run home run. His 9th home run of the season gave San Diego a 2-1 lead.

"We busted our tails," said Kansas City manager DD Martin. "But we came up short."
