The Cleveland Bobcats did just enough to sneak past the Washington Eagles, 5-4, at Lakefront Stadium. Cleveland pitcher Roger Scherf, in particular, had a standout performance. In 6.1 innings, Scherf surrendered 7 hits, while striking out 3 and walking 2. He allowed 4 runs. Joe Clabaugh finished to wrap up his 3rd save.
Tom Crowell, who finished 5th in the NBL in stolen bases with 42 in 1972, helped out the Cleveland cause in the bottom of the fifth inning with a run-scoring ground out. For the game, the center fielder drew 1 walk in 4 plate appearances.
"We had a good game plan," Scherf said, "and we were able to execute it."
The defeat makes the Eagles 5-8.
