Riding the 3-hit performance of the 30-year old second baseman Lou Ward, the Houston Drillers stopped the Montreal Habitants, 10-2. Jerry Zaruba, who finished 4th in the NBL in innings pitched with 257.1 in 1971, was the winning pitcher. Over 8 innings, he allowed 2 runs on 5 hits, with 4 walks and no strikeouts. The defeat makes Montreal 67-66.

Early in the game, Ward had a solo home run for Houston. It was his 10th home run of the season and put the Drillers on top, 1-0.

"I thought we played a nice game," Ward told the Houston Observer. "Good pitching, timely hitting, it was all there."
