Captains Win 2-1 Nail-Biter Versus Industrials
|
In a low-scoring affair between the San Diego Captains and the Pittsburgh Industrials, pitcher Mark Pike was the difference between victory and defeat. The San Diego right-hander earned accolades for his stellar performance in the 2-1 Captains win. San Diego reliever Ed Prater got the win, raising his record to 1-1. John Fagan was tagged with the loss. The first-place Captains, at 81-51, lead the National Baseball League Western Division by 2½ games.
The clutch at-bat came in the bottom of the 11th inning, when San Diego first baseman Troy Stallings, facing John Fagan, had a run-scoring sacrifice fly. It gave the Captains the 2-1 win.
"We couldn't have scripted it any better," Stallings said in his postgame press conference.
