Explorers Jolt Bluebirds, 3-1, with Late Rally
|
Tommy Phillips pitched a gem to lead St. Louis to victory over the Brooklyn Bluebirds, 3-1. Phillips, now 7-7, was the winner. In 7.1 innings, he gave up 6 hits, while striking out 7, walking 1, and allowing 1 run. Bernie Tate collected his 16th save.
Gary Parker came through with a big-time hit for St. Louis. The right fielder smacked a 2-run home run in the top of the eighth inning to give his team the lead, 3-1. It was his only hit, but it was clutch.
"Tommy was throwing strikes, locating well," said St. Louis manager Ray Fleetwood.
The Explorers now have a record of 60-75.
