The Houston Drillers had to overcome a fine effort from New York pitcher Larry Stanford to win, 2-1, at Sam Houston Field. Stanford went 6 innings and allowed no runs. Houston reliever Bill Footman was the winner. His record is now 1-1. The losing pitcher was Dave Kretz. Houston goes to 78-57, New York to 76-58.
The Drillers got a clutch hit from catcher Mickey Hoffman. In the bottom of the tenth, he delivered a run-scoring single to win the game for the Drillers.
"Tough loss," said New York manager Dan Whiting. "Tough one to swallow."
