The New York Empires clipped the Houston Drillers, 4-3, in 10 innings at Queens Field. The standout performance belonged to New York pitcher and Beecher, Illinois, native Jon Pierce. New York is now 75-59, while Houston is 70-65.

New York got a knockout punch from Roger Hickey. The pinch hitter hammered a solo home run in the bottom of the tenth inning to win the game. It might've been his only hit, but it decided the outcome.

"That was your kind of game, if you like high drama," said Empires manager Dan Whiting.
