Bieler Stars in 9-6 Win for St. Louis
|
The St. Louis Explorers defeated the Philadelphia Quakers, 9-6, in National Baseball League action at Corps of Discovery Stadium. Dave Bieler pulled his weight. The 8-year veteran went 4-5 with a home run and 3 singles, while scoring 2 and driving in 3. The 6th-place Explorers now have a record of 60-75.
Fernando Martinez had a big 2-run triple for the Explorers in the bottom of the first inning. With St. Louis leading 1-0 and runners on 1st and 3rd, he got a sinker from 1964 Royal Ricketts Award winner Mel Hartman and swatted a triple to right-center. It was his 3rd triple of the season, and more importantly, it put the Explorers ahead, 3-0.
"We swung the bats good throughout the lineup," said St. Louis skipper Ray Fleetwood.
