Lawler Swats 2 Homers, Eagles Top Industrials, 5-3
|
Enthusiastic fans came out to support the home team at Monument Field.
The Washington Eagles beat the Pittsburgh Industrials, 5-3, at Monument Field. The Eagles got a fine performance from center fielder Jeff Lawler, who went 3-4 with 2 home runs, while adding 4 RBI and scoring twice. The winning pitcher was 27-year old left-handed pitcher Arnold Jarry. He tossed 94 pitches over 7 innings, allowing 3 runs on 6 hits. Richie Kingery closed it out for Washington, earning his 9th save.
With Washington leading 3-2 in the bottom of the sixth, Lawler hit a run-scoring single off Pittsburgh hurler Ron Winder. It was the 93rd hit of the season for Lawler and put his team ahead, 4-2.
"Trying isn't good enough in this league," said Lawler. "You've got to get results."
Washington, at 61-76, occupies 6th place in the National Baseball League Eastern Division.
