Empires Victorious at Houston, 8-6

The New York Empires beat the Houston Drillers, 8-6, at Sam Houston Field. The Empires got a fine performance from center fielder Roger Hickey, who went 4-5 with 4 singles. He scored 2 runs. Dave Kretz claimed the win after being brought in from the bullpen. The right-hander allowed 2 runs on 5 hits in 4.1 innings. His record stands at 2-1. The win puts New York at 73-64 this season.
New York won the game in part because of Paul Brower. The left fielder ripped a 3-run home run in the top of the fifth inning to put the Empires ahead, 6-3. For the game, Brower had 1 double and 1 home run in 4 at-bats.
"We swung the bats good throughout the lineup," said New York skipper Dan Whiting.
