The New York Empires besoiled an otherwise fine performance by Toronto center fielder Jorge Luna by beating the Hurons, 6-3, at Queens Field. Luna went 3-3 with a home run, 2 singles, and a walk, while scoring 2 and driving in 2. Dave Kretz notched the win in relief. The right-hander allowed no runs on 2 hits in 2 innings. His record now sits at 6-6. The win gives New York a season record of 79-60.
New York first baseman Lowell Bickle helped the Empires go up, 5-3, in the bottom of the seventh inning. With the game tied, Bickle hit a 2-run single off Toronto pitcher Bob LeVangie.
"I really like what we did out there today," Bickle said after the game.
